ODIHR staff meets with the management of the MIA RT

On 29 October 2014 the representatives of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) Mr. Richard Lappin Senior Election Adviser, Mr. Alexey Gromov Election Adviser and Ms. Maria Chepurina Program Officer of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly have met with the management of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Republic of Tajikistan (RT).
The MIA was represented by the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Major General Ikrom Umarzoda and by the Head of International Cooperation Department Colonel Zumrad Solieva.
The issues of public order protection and public safety during the election campaign and preparations for the elections by the law enforcement agencies were discussed during the meeting. Ensuring of human rights and other issues related to the ODIHR competence were also considered.
The OSCE/ODIHR Needs Assessment Mission (NAM) for the parliamentary elections in the Republic of Tajikistan has visited Tajikistan from 27 to 29 October 2014. The NAM has arrived to assess the pre-election environment and the preparations for the elections, and also to make recommendations on possible activities of the OSCE/ODIHR for the forthcoming parliamentary elections in the country.
According to the ODIHR/OSCE standard methodology, the purpose of the NAM was to assess the pre-election situation and preparations for the parliamentary elections. Based on this assessment, the Mission should recommend whether to deploy an OSCE/ODIHR election-related activity for the forthcoming elections. Further NAM will prepare recommendations if to implement any activity of ODIHR/OSCE affiliated with the forthcoming elections, and if so, what type of activity best meets the identified needs.
During the visit, NAM has also met with the representatives of other ministries and agencies of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of RT, political parties, civil society, mass media and diplomatic corps, accredited in the RT.
