"Youth against Drugs" Campaign

On 13 March 2014, the OSCE Kulyab Field Assistants have visited the opening ceremony dedicated to “Youth against drugs” that was held in the premises of sport complex “Aloqa.”
More than 500 representatives of youth (students, schoolchildren), of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), of the Committee on Emergency Situations and Civil Defence under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Drug Control Agency (DCA) under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, local municipality of Kulyab city and other guests have participated. The representatives from the MIA and other concerned agencies made an opening and welcome speech. Sportsmen from different regions of the country also took participation in the event. As part of the event, there were cultural performances, such as songs and dances. Local media was also invited to the campaign. They took interviews from the event organizers and its key participants.
In the second part of the event up to 5:00 pm there were sport competitions on chess, wrestling, volleyball, basketball and table tennis in Rudaki park and youth centre of Kulyab. All winners were given the prizes.
At 5:00 pm was an information campaign with participation of 113 people from different law enforcement structures and local agencies on drug prevention in Kulyab town was conducted.
The OSCE Field Assistant in Kulyab has informed participants on the OSCE Office in Tajikistan’s activities, particularly on the activities of the political and military department in the area of implementation of state programs in combating illicit drug trafficking and on continuous efforts of the Department to strengthen the partnership with all relevant law enforcement agencies and their co-operation with the communities. The Project Manager of the Women Resource Centre in Kulyab Ms. Kurbongul Kosimova shared comprehensive information on drug addiction and its harmful effects on human health, as well as on measures taken in this direction by the public organization. Ms. Kosimova has also mentioned that their organization conducts a number of awareness raising campaigns amongst the youth and other diverse population.
The Deputy Director of the DCA under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Nodirkhon Murodov has briefed on the DCA’s activities countrywide and emphasized that last year 6’600 kg of drugs were seized, which is for 600 kg more than previous year. He also mentioned that instead of decreasing the number of cases of illicit drug trafficking, on the contrary, this trend is increasing year by year and the number of drug addicted people also increases accordingly. According to official statistics in Tajikistan, the number of drug addicted people is 7’852, 1’270 persons are from Kulyab, including 38 - females.
The organizers of the event - representatives of the MIA RT Republican Council “Dynamo” shared with participants on their annual drug prevention sport campaigns amongst the youth by awareness raising and implementation of the National Strategy on drug combatting endorsed by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan. At the end of conference, participants adopted a resolution to combat drug addiction. This activity will focus on decreasing the drug related crimes, based on community policing as a platform.
