OSCE supports Tajik state traffic police department in public safety efforts

The Head of the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe, Tuula Yrjölä, met with students of Gymnasium No. 74 in Dushanbe on 10 May 2018 together with representatives of the State Traffic Police Department to raise their awareness of traffic rules.

"Annually up to 500 children fall victim to road accidents and this is a cause of great concern. In most cases the cause of an accident is lack of road safety awareness among children," said Yrjölä.

During the event, the Young Traffic Inspectors, who represent a group of students from the school, gave a thematic presentation and the students staged a sketch about road safety rules.

With the support of the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe, in the framework of the OSCE project on police reform, more than 50 events like these will be conducted throughout the country by the State Traffic Police Department in 2018.  The Programme Office also supported the traffic police and national education departments in publishing a booklet on road safety rules for schoolchildren.  More than 5,000 booklets and 25,000 keychain-reflectors fobs will be distributed at the events.
