OSCE, Saferworld organized training course for members of the Public Council in Khatlon region

KURGAN-TYUBE, Tajikistan (7 July 2017) - Training course for members of public councils on police reform under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan in Khatlon region was conducted from 5 to 7 July in Kurgan-Tube city. The training course was jointly organized by the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe and international organization Saferworld.

 

Some 10 members of the Public Council, the Interior Ministry’s Office of the National Co-ordinator, representatives of Saferwrold and employees of the Department for the Protection of Public Order and inspectors from Gender-Sensitive Police Unit responsible for gender and domestic violence issues attended the course.

The participants shared their knowledge of and best practices in community policing. They reviewed the main aspects of the police reform strategy/programme and the Provision on Public Councils. Effective approaches to improving police-community relations, preventing domestic violence and countering radicalization and extremism among youth were also discussed. Participants also enhanced their skills in drafting presentations and organizing productive meetings with local communities within the framework of Public Council activities.

In the question about if the OSCE will continue supporting the public councils, the OSCE staff explained to participants that in accordance with the plans of the project on police reform agreed with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the OSCE will continue supporting activities of all the public councils throughout Tajikistan.
